Which option is right for analyzing my metric?

There are several ways to visualize trends in your metrics.

You’ll find all the options described in this article in the Analyses section of the UI:

  • On a metric’s homepage: Click the 3-dot menu for a metric view. Then, select Personalize view. Adjust the chart type and style, if needed, to access the Analyses options.

  • For metric visualizations on a dashboard: With the dashboard in edit mode, select a metric. Click the Display tab and adjust the chart type and style, if needed, to access the Analyses options.

  • In Explorer: Adjust the chart type and style, if needed, to access the Analyses options.

Analysis option When to use Supported chart types
no analysis option Select the no analysis option if you want to see the current data without any analytic overlay. Applicable to bar / column and line / area charts. (Not applicable to the 100% stacked versions of bar and column charts or stacked area charts.)
linear trend option Select the linear trend option if you want to see a straight line, indicating the general direction of your data. Applicable to bar / column and line / area charts. (Not applicable to the stacked versions of these charts.)

Dates must display on the x-axis (unless it's a bar chart, in which case, dates must display on the y-axis).

If a metric visualization doesn’t have multiple time values, it will default to a bar chart instead of a line chart.
moving average option Select the moving average option if you want to smooth our fluctuations in the data. This may help you more clearly see patterns and trends in data that includes a lot of variation. Applicable to bar / column and line / area charts. (Not applicable to the stacked versions of these charts.)

Dates must display on the x-axis (unless it's a bar chart, in which case, dates must display on the y-axis).

If a metric visualization doesn’t have multiple time values, it will default to a bar chart instead of a line chart.
normal range option Select the normal range option if you want to understand metric trends by looking at past behaviour and identify outliers (values outside the normal range) in your historical data. Learn more about normal range analysis. Applicable to unsegmented, non-cumulative bar and line charts that have time on the x-axis (or on the y-axis for horizontal bar charts).

Note: Normal range analysis is a premium feature available in all paid plans. On a free plan and want to upgrade? Learn how here.
forecast option Select the forecast option if you want to see a prediction of future metric performance. Learn more about forecast analysis.

Applicable to unsegmented, non-cumulative line charts that have time on the x-axis.

Note: Forecast analysis is a premium feature available in all paid plans. On a free plan and want to upgrade? Learn how here.
