PowerMetrics or Klips?
Klipfolio offers something for everyone! No matter your level of experience with analytics, from novice to data expert, we’ve got you covered. We also provide solutions for every business size and data management use case.
PowerMetrics enables self-serve analytics for business users. Metrics are accessed from a centralized catalog that’s governed by the data team. This list of certified, curated metrics makes it easy for business users to select the right metrics for single-source-of-truth data. They’re free to explore, analyze, and personalize metric visualizations (without affecting the source data) and to build and share dashboards and reports.
PowerMetrics meets you where you are today and grows with you into the future. With several metric types that can be used standalone or combined as multi-metrics, calculated metrics, and on dashboards, there’s a solution for every data scenario. Data feed metrics are a perfect way to get started. As your data stack matures, our direct to data warehouse and semantic layer solutions enable your analytics journey to continue, seamlessly.
Klips helps small businesses connect to their data and visualize it as Klips. Pull in data stored locally or in the cloud, upload spreadsheets, or write custom queries. Connect to data from cloud/API services using our built-in connectors and our REST/URL option.
Klips provides fully customizable dashboards and reports for you and your clients. It combines the power of formulas, functions, and data modeling with report automation, dashboard templates, embedding, easy sharing, custom theming, and more.
This article describes the following steps in your data journey:
1. Connecting
With Klipfolio, you can access data from cloud applications, local files, cloud file sharing services, SQL databases, data warehouses, and semantic layers. Check out the hundreds of service options offered by Klipfolio.
Connecting your data to Klipfolio is pretty straightforward. You typically begin by entering the account credentials for the related service, for example, the username and password for your company Facebook page, data warehouse, or semantic layer.
In PowerMetrics, depending on the service you’re connecting to, you may create a data feed. In Klips, you create a data source. That data feed or data source will be the basis for representing your data as metric visualizations or as Klips. Learn more about data feeds and data sources for metrics and data sources for Klips.
Need a unique set of data? Write your own queries from scratch and create a custom data feed or data source. Don’t know how to write a data query? No worries! Klipfolio offers pre-built assets that include the most commonly sought-after data points. If you're a PowerMetrics user, you'll have access to instant metrics. Available for our most popular services, instant metrics connect to your data and create metric visualizations simultaneously! For Klips users, you can take advantage of our pre-built data sources.
Want to clean up messy data to improve the custom building experience? Use the data feed editor (for data feeds) or the modeller (for data sources) to prepare and refine your source data before using it to create custom metrics and Klips. Learn more about editing data feeds and modelling data sources.
When connecting to a data warehouse or semantic layer, your data is visualized and explored in PowerMetrics but is managed and stored in its source location. When changes occur in the source data, metrics in PowerMetrics are updated either manually or automatically with a webhook. Learn more about connecting to a data warehouse. 2. Visualizing
Show off your data! Now that you have data, it’s time to visually present it, for example, as a table or a bar chart. You can visualize your data in multiple ways in Klipfolio, either as metrics or as Klips, on their own or grouped together on a dashboard.
- Metrics: A metric is a value that's recorded over time, for example, Profit or Monthly Recurring Revenue. When you track the metrics that are most meaningful to your business, you get continuous access to current and historical information, enabling you to make the right decisions at the right time. PowerMetrics includes metrics for every situation: data feed instant and custom metrics, direct to warehouse metrics, semantic layer metrics (with our Cube integration), and dbt Semantic Layer metrics. All of these metric types can be visualized on their own or combined as multi-metrics and calculated metrics.
- Metric dashboards: Metric dashboards display your related metrics. Whether adding a pre-built dashboard template or building one from scratch, all of our dashboards are fully customizable, empowering you to create unique displays tailored to your specific needs and audience. This flexibility enables you to mold your data to effectively inform others and illustrate progress toward your business goals.

- Klips: A Klip is a visual representation of data, like a pie chart, bar chart, or gauge. Klips are populated by your data and update dynamically based on the refresh rate of the associated data source. You can either use pre-built Klips from the Klip Gallery or build your own custom Klips using the Klip Editor.
- Klip dashboards: You display your Klips on a dashboard, which you can then show on large screens throughout the office or share with individuals or teams. Dashboards are a great way to consolidate similar content all in one place.

3. Sharing
Get everyone talking about your data! Encourage collaboration by sharing your metrics, Klips, and dashboards with others. Distributing data trends and results helps keep everyone on the same page and progressing toward common goals. It also encourages discussion and meaningful action.
There are many ways to share in Klipfolio, including downloading and sharing PDFs of your favourite dashboards, sharing a snapshot of your data (a static moment in time), or by sharing links to a dynamically updated view of your data. You can share with groups or individual people in your Klipfolio account or you can share with everyone in your office at once by displaying your dashboards, metrics, and Klips on large screens.

4. Taking action
Now that you have your data, what do you do with it? Exploring and personalizing your visualizations will help you get to know your data. The familiarity you’ll gain from tracking its progress over time will help you quickly identify changes so you can act if needed. Adding goals and indicators will ensure you don’t miss a thing.
Check out a metric’s homepage to quickly compare progress over time, access metric details, and visualize your data automatically using a professionally curated, yet customizable, template.
Open a metric(s) in the Explorer to analyze and dig deeper into your data in a personalized, free-form way. It’s the perfect place to investigate and learn without affecting the metric’s underlying data or its default display for others. Get help exploring your data and building visualizations with PowerMetrics AI. It can be used in combination with manual personalized configurations or it can automate the entire experience.
Stay on top of changes in your data by adding goals to your metrics. Depending on how they’re set up, you’ll be informed by in-app and/or email notifications when targets and thresholds are met (or not met).
In Klips, make historical comparisons between different time periods or set up performance indicators that indicate changes in your data. Go here for an example.
Remember to check back on your data as often as possible – we recommend you do this every day! Evidence shows that businesses that track their data on a daily basis notice trends and shifts that help them make effective decisions without delay.
