How do I work with dashboards on my smartphone?
Our intuitive design makes it easy to view dashboards on your smart phone. Here’s a brief description of the actions you can perform in mobile view.
Open your list of dashboards and see the owner (creator) for each one:
- In the left navigation sidebar, tap Dashboards. Note: If you’re in an open dashboard, tap the menu in the upper left corner to access sidebar options.
Open a specific dashboard:
- In your list of dashboards, tap a dashboard to open it.
- If you need help finding a dashboard, enter text in the search field or tap the dropdown to display All dashboards (dashboards that you created or that have been shared with you), or My dashboards (dashboards you created), or <Group Name> (dashboards that have been shared with a specific group).
- Move between dashboards by tapping the drop-down arrow at the end of the open dashboard’s name and tapping the dashboard you want to view. Note: The list that displays may include duplicates as it mimics the menu in the left navigation sidebar that lists all open dashboard instances. To close dashboard instances, switch to desktop view, tap the 3-dot menu beside the dashboard name in the left navigation sidebar, and select Remove.
View Klips:
- If a dashboard includes multiple Klips, scroll between them. Note: Klips are presented in a single column. The order in which they display depends on the dashboard setup. If the dashboard was built using a template, then the Klip display order matches the display order in the desktop version of the dashboard, from left to right and top to bottom. If not, the Klip display order will match the order in which they were added to the dashboard.
Access in-app help, what’s new, theme settings, and other Klipfolio products:
- In the left navigation sidebar, above your account name, you’ll find quick buttons to:
- Open in-app help and see what's new
- Change between a light, slate, or dark theme
- Switch to a different Klipfolio product (if applicable for your account)
- Open in-app help and see what's new
Switch between mobile and desktop view:
- In the left navigation sidebar, tap the
button (located above your account name) and select Switch to desktop view or Switch to mobile view.
Sign out:
- In the left navigation sidebar, tap your Account Name > Sign out.
How should I design my dashboards and Klips for optimal mobile viewing?
Here are a few tips for designing dashboards and Klips for display on a smartphone.
-
Streamline visualizations for at-a-glance access. Dashboards for desktop and wall displays can effectively display a lot of data, with the potential for all-encompassing, complex visualizations. However, this design strategy doesn’t work as well on smaller mobile screens. It also doesn’t align with a true mobile experience, where users want portable, fast access to their data. When designing dashboards for mobile consumption, we recommend adding simple, single-purpose, uncluttered Klips. For example, you could display data in a gauge with bold numbers and colourful indicators instead of in text-heavy tables.
-
Avoid excessively-wide horizontal Klips, often the result of adding several side-by-side components. For example, instead of adding a complex horizontal layout with 3 or 4 charts beside each other, add single visualizations, such as a bar or line chart, 4 value pair components in a 2 x 2 layout grid, or a layout grid with 1 x 3 sparklines.
-
Provide up-to-the-minute information. The ability to quickly see what’s happening right now is always beneficial, regardless of where you’re consuming your dashboards. However, when viewing visualizations on a smartphone, often remotely and when on-the-go, having quick access to current information is absolutely essential. We recommend building Klips that clearly show current data. For example, add Klips that show current data only or make it easy to switch between date ranges by adding a user input control.
-
Shorten dashboard and Klip titles. Use concise titles to ensure they don’t get inadvertently truncated.
-
Be careful with abbreviations and acronyms. Short forms can help you quickly and succinctly communicate information. However, be careful not to overuse them. Too many abbreviations can make chart labels harder to read and understand and, unless carefully thought out, can sometimes even alter the intended meaning. Balance conciseness and clarity by checking all abbreviations for readability and ambiguity.
-
Consider the impact of applying fixed pixel widths. If you customize your Klips by applying fixed pixel widths, they may not display as expected. Klipfolio automatically adjusts to the available space in a display. If all columns in a table and all cells in a layout grid have fixed widths, the Klip will not adjust in size or may be cut off when viewed on a smartphone.
-
Test dashboards and Klips in a simulator. To preview the mobile presentation for dashboards and their Klips, we recommend using a simulator in your browser.
-
Build the right dashboard for the job. To reflect different use cases and environments, many of our customers build specific dashboards to display on mobile and on desktop and wall boards.
