Use the Metric Overview Page to quickly assess and understand a metric’s performance. In this dashboard-like presentation, you can view a single metric from different perspectives (as a scorecard, a time series chart, and a bar chart) all at the same time! Investigate your data by applying filters and choosing alternate time ranges and configuration options (such as aggregation type and comparisons).

Think of the Metric Overview as a homepage for each of your metrics. It’s a great place to gain an at-a-glance perspective and, when needed, to dig deeper into your data.

Navigating the Overview Page

To access the Overview Page for a metric:

  • From the metric list, select a metric to display its Overview Page.
  • When you create a metric, it automatically displays in the Overview Page view.

On the Overview Page, click the 3-dot menu beside the metric’s name to:

  • Enter the Explore View for the metric
  • Edit the metric (only available if you created the metric)
  • Add the metric to your list of favourites
  • Delete the metric (only available if you created the metric)

Visualizing and configuring a metric in the Overview Page

In the Overview Page, you have access to 3 different visualizations for a metric, all in the same page:

  • Scorecard view
  • Time series chart view
  • Bar chart view

Note: The bar chart view is included only if your modelled data source includes at least one non-time-related dimension.

Each visualization type has unique configuration options, accessible from their “Gear” icon.

Changes made to a metric in the Overview Page persist. Your most recent settings are remembered and will display in the Overview Page the next time you log in.

When you visualize and configure a metric in the Overview page, you:

Selecting a time range

Choose the Time Range you want to display for all visualizations in your Overview Page.

The default setting is "All Time" with a date range (in brackets) that includes all data for the metric, from the first data point to the last data point. If you want to compare data between time periods, select an option other than “All Time”.

Filtering

Apply filtering to determine which dimensions and dimensional members you want to see in all visualizations in the Overview Page.

  1. Click the Filter button and select the dimension(s).

  1. Click Apply.
  2. For each dimension you selected in the previous step, choose the members you want to be available for all visualizations on the Overview Page.

For example, if you chose “Country” as a dimension (category) in step 1, and then selected “CAN” and “USA”, you will only see data for those countries.

Note: If your metric has a large number of dimensional members, the first 21 are auto-selected for you. You can remove items by clicking the x beside their name or add items by clicking the arrow in the filter window and selecting from the drop-down list.

The scorecard view

Sometimes you want a quick, at-a-glance summary of your business performance … that’s why we put the scorecard view at the top of a metric’s Overview Page.

See below for an example of a scorecard view:

Click the Gear icon for a scorecard view to:

  • Optionally, select an alternate Aggregation method.

The selected default aggregation method is based on the choice you made when creating the metric.

  • Choose to either apply no comparison (None) or to compare your data to a previous period (vs. Previous period).

Comparisons are made between equivalent time period types. For example, if the time range selected is “today”, then the previous period will be “yesterday”. For a scorecard, the percentage difference between the current value and the previous value (the delta) displays. Green is used for data that has improved and red for data that has regressed.

The time series chart view

The time series chart view displays data points, in a successive order, over time. This chart type is ideal for demonstrating performance progress over a set time period.

See below for an example of a time series chart view:

Click the Gear icon for a time series chart view to:

  • Choose whether you want to break lines for blank values.

When there are gaps in data, for example, if data is not refreshed during a time period, you can choose to break the chart lines to show the gaps in data. Alternatively, you can display a continuous line, where a line is drawn between known data points to fill in the gaps. By default, we break lines for blank values but you can deselect this checkbox if you’d rather see a continuous line.

  • Optionally, select an alternate Aggregation method.

The selected default aggregation method is based on the choice you made when creating the metric.

  • Under Over, choose how you want your data to be grouped.

Klipfolio automatically sets the time periodicity to use for your metric based on the date range you selected. For example, if you are viewing data for the “Last 12 Months”, the data is displayed per month. However, you can override the auto-selected time periodicity by choosing an alternate option from the drop-down list.

  • Choose to either apply no comparison (None) or to compare your data to a previous period (vs. Previous period).

Comparisons are made between equivalent time period types. For example, if the time range selected is “today”, then the previous period will be “yesterday”. For a time series chart, the previous period’s data displays as a grey dotted line.

The bar chart view

A bar chart view is optimal for comparing categories of data.

See below for an example of a bar chart view:

When investigating bar chart data for a metric, select the dimension by which you want to filter your data by clicking the drop-down arrow beside Segment by. You can choose either a time dimension or a non-time-related dimension.

Click the Gear icon for a bar chart view to:

  • Optionally, select an alternate Aggregation method.

The selected default aggregation method is based on the choice you made when creating the metric.

  • Under Over, choose how you want your data to be grouped.

Klipfolio automatically sets the time periodicity to use for your metric based on the date range you selected. For example, if you are viewing data for the “Last 12 Months”, the data is displayed per month. However, you can override the auto-selected time periodicity by choosing an alternate option from the drop-down list. By default, the x axis displays time but bar charts enable you to select either a time dimension to group by or a non-time-related dimension.

  • Choose to either apply no comparison (None) or to compare your data to a previous period (vs. Previous period).

Comparisons are made between equivalent time period types. For example, if the time range selected is “today”, then the previous period will be “yesterday”. For a bar chart, the previous period’s data displays as a grey dotted line.
