Editing a metric

When modifying a metric you can either change the default version for everyone or just your personal view. This article describes how to edit the default version of a metric. For information on changing your personal view, go here.

Editing options vary depending on where they're performed. You can edit the default version of a metric from either:

  • A metric's Explore View - where you can edit underlying data and display properties
  • A metric dashboard (in edit mode) - where you can edit display properties only

Note: You can only edit a metric if you created it or you've been granted shared access to it with editing permissions.

This article includes the following sections:

Editing underlying data and display properties for a metric

If you want to change the underlying data, for example, make changes to the data source on which the metric is based, you need to perform your edits in the metric's Explore View. You can also edit the display properties for a metric from there.

Note: The following list of options refers to custom metrics. Instant metrics are managed by Klipfolio and only include the option to rename.

When editing a metric in its Explore View, you can:

  • Rename the metric.
  • Note that this is the only editing option available for instant metrics.
  • View and edit the details for its associated modelled data source.
  • Change the value you want to measure.
  • Change the aggregation method.
  • Select whether you want to show your data cumulatively.
  • Change the favourable trend settings.
  • Choose a different data type format, including numeric, currency, or percentage (summary chart type only).
  • Choose different dimensions by which to segment your data.
  • Select a different dimension to use for time.
  • Choose an alternate method for calculating the total metric value for a date range.

Note:

  • There are some editing options (changing the measure or the time dimension) that will prompt you to “Delete and reimport data”. This action irreversibly deletes existing data for the metric and replaces it with current data from the associated modelled data source. It also deletes any accumulated metric history and restarts collecting history as of the date of reimport.
  • The refresh rate for a metric is determined by its associated data source. If you want to edit a metric's refresh settings, go to its data source details page.

To edit a metric in its Explore View:

  1. In the left navigation sidebar, click Metrics to display the Metric List page.
  2. Select the metric you want to edit to enter its Explore View.
  3. Click the 3-dot menu in the top navigation bar and click Edit.
  4. Rename the metric by selecting its current name and typing a new one.
  5. View and edit the details for the associated modelled data source by clicking the link under Data source.
  6. Change the Measure.

After clicking Save, you will be prompted to click Delete and reimport data. See note above.

  1. Change the aggregation method using the drop-down list under Default aggregation.
  2. Select Show as cumulative, if you want to view your metric's data as a cumulative sequence.
  3. Under Favourable trend, choose whether you want ascending or descending values to indicate a positive trend. For example, if your metric includes sales totals, a higher (ascending) number demonstrates a positive trend but, if your metric includes expense totals, a lower (descending) number indicates a positive trend. Note that this option only applies to scorecard (single value) visualizations. Favourable trends are indicated by a green arrow.
  4. Under Format, choose a different data type. Choices include Numeric, Currency, and Percentage.
  5. Under Segment by, select alternate dimensions by which to filter your data.
  6. Under Date and time > Time dimension, select an alternate Time dimension setting (either a timestamp column from your modelled data source or the date and time of import).

After clicking Save, you will be prompted to click Delete and reimport data. See note above.

  1. Under Tell us about your data, select an alternate method for calculating the total metric value for a date range, by selecting from Transactional values, Current values, or Periodic summary (Hour, Day, Month, Year).
  2. When you are finished editing the metric, click Save.

All instances of the metric are automatically updated with your changes.

Deleting and reimporting metric data

After creating a metric, you might decide you want to focus on a different measure than the one you originally chose. Or, perhaps, you later added a column of data to your modelled data source and now want that data to be included in your metric. Instead of starting over, you can delete the metric’s existing data and replace it with current data from your modelled data source.

Note that when you delete and reimport data, you irreversibly delete existing data in the metric and replace it with current data from the associated modelled data source. Accumulated history for the metric is deleted and historical collection begins again as of the date of reimport.

To delete and reimport metric data:

  1. In the metric's Explore View, click the 3-dot menu in the top navigation bar and click Additional options > Delete and reimport data.
  2. Click Delete and reimport data.

Editing display properties only for a metric

If you want to change a metric's default display properties only, you can do so from a dashboard.

When you modify the display properties for a metric, the changes you make and the editing options that are available are based on the original settings you chose when you created the metric.

When editing the display properties for a metric from a dashboard, you can modify the following settings:

  • Rename the metric.
  • Change the chart type and style.
  • Choose to display data as a continuous line or break lines when there are gaps in data.
  • Add or remove comparisons to other time periods.
  • Add or remove trend lines.
  • Add multiple metrics to individual visualizations.
  • Change the aggregation method.
  • Select whether you want to show your data cumulatively.
  • Choose different dimensions by which to segment your data.
  • Choose a different time periodicity, for example, hourly, daily, or weekly.
  • Change the date range to either use the dashboard date range or a custom date range.
  • Change filters by selecting or deselecting members for each dimension.

To edit a metric's display properties from a metric dashboard:

  1. With the dashboard open, click the Edit button.
  2. Select the metric you want to edit.

You can, alternatively, click on the 3-dot menu for the metric you want to modify and select Edit. This opens the properties panel with the selected metric in focus.

The properties panel displays on the right.

  1. When you are finished editing the metric, click Save.

Those with shared access to the dashboard must choose the "Revert" option from the dashboard’s 3-dot menu to see the new default version.
