Circular references could be the reason you are getting an error in the formula bar when using results references or formula references. Circular references are when a component/sub-component references another component/sub-component that references back to the original component/sub-component. For example, in Klips, if a Table refers to a Scatter chart and the Scatter chart refers back to the Table, it will result in an error.
