Why does Klips need permission to connect to my service accounts?

We care about your data privacy. We recommend you always ask why a software service needs permissions.

Some general questions include:

  • Is the app or service from a trustworthy source?
  • Do I understand why this app needs these permissions?

Why does Klips need permission to connect to your service data?

Klips asks for these permissions to allow the Klips app to connect to your data. Without permission to access your data, you won't be able to see your data in the visualizations you build or retrieve data to store in the Klips you create.

Tell me more about how permissions work

By design, data services protect users by asking apps, like Klips, to apply for and then request permission from the user. Part of the authentication process for services that use OAuth (a secure authentication method) requires that you allow Klips to access information and data associated with your account.

Klips asks for read only permissions by default but there are some services, for example, those with only one level of permission, that require us to request read/write permission. Please note -- Klips never actually writes data to your data source.

Some services, like Google, allow you to access multiple applications. For these services, Klips uses the same credentials (or OAuth token) to access the additional accounts you want to connect to. For example, the first time you authenticate with Google, Klips may ask for permission to access YouTube. We won't actually connect to your YouTube data until you create queries against YouTube. But, asking for permission when you first authenticate makes it easier for you to connect to YouTube (and other Google services) later.

If you manage multiple accounts and you want to connect to data from those accounts, Klips will ask for additional permissions.

Note: To see the services you've connected Klips to, go to your list of connections. (Click your Account Name at the bottom of the left navigation sidebar and select Account > Connected Accounts. If you don’t see this option, click the button in the left navigation sidebar and select Connections.)

What does Klips do with the information it collects?

For data sources and modelled data sources, the data is not placed in long term storage. Each refresh replaces the data. For more information, please review our Privacy and Security policies.
