Connecting to your Google Ads data

Here are a couple things to note about connecting Klipfolio to your Google Ads data:

Your data is safe with us. The first time you connect your Google Ads data to Klipfolio, you'll be prompted to sign in to Google Ads and give permission to allow Klipfolio to securely access data within your Google Ads account. We are serious about protecting your data privacy.

Managing your connections. By default, your connection name looks like this: yourname@GoogleAds <date and time created>. You can modify the default connection name when you create a new connection or from your list of connections, accessed by clicking your Account Name (located at the bottom of the left navigation sidebar) and selecting Account > Connected Accounts or by clicking the button in the left navigation sidebar and selecting Connections.

You can use and reuse the same account connection every time you connect to Google Ads. If you have trouble accessing an existing connection, your OAuth token may have expired. If that happens to you, check out these troubleshooting tips.

Adding a Google Ads pre-built data source

Our pre-built data sources focus on the most sought-after Google Ads data. Either use them as complete solutions or as starting points for custom building.

Note: To use the Client List (Manager Account) pre-built data source, you require the Google Ads Manager Account access level. Learn how to gain or grant access to a manager account.

To add a Google Ads pre-built data source:

  1. Click the + beside Data Sources in the left navigation sidebar.

If you don’t see the option above, go to the bottom of the left navigation sidebar and click your Account Name > Data Sources > Create a New Data Source.

  1. On the Where is your data? page, select Google Ads.
  2. Select a pre-built data source from the left section of the Choose a pre-built or custom connection page.
  3. If this is your first time connecting to Google Ads:
    • Click Connect an account. Enter your Google Ads login credentials and click Next. If prompted, click Allow Access to enable Klipfolio to securely access your Google Ads data. Click Continue.
  4. If you have connected with Google Ads before:
    • Select an existing connection (token) from the drop-down list and click Continue.
  5. On the Configure your data source page, if prompted, select your Google Ads Company Name from the drop-down list or select a report template. For more detailed information on configuring reports, see Adding a Google Ads custom data source, below.
  6. Click Get data.
  7. Ensure this is the data you’re looking for and, optionally, select the checkbox to Model your data. Learn more about modelling your data source. Note: Google Ads returns XML or CSV formatted data, depending on your data request. Learn how to model JSON/XML data.
  8. Click Continue.
  9. Name, choose refresh settings, and, optionally, share your data source.
  10. Click Save.

The data source is added to your account and is ready to use for custom Klips. You can see all your data sources in your Data Source Library, accessed by clicking Data Sources in the left navigation sidebar.

Adding a Google Ads custom data source

Need a unique set of data? When our pre-built data sources don't include exactly what you're looking for, create your own custom data source. You can either use a pre-built data source query as a base or write your own queries from scratch.

Notes:

To add a Google Ads custom data source:

  1. Click the + beside Data Sources in the left navigation sidebar.

If you don’t see the option above, go to the bottom of the left navigation sidebar and click your Account Name > Data Sources > Create a New Data Source.

  1. On the Where is your data? page, select Google Ads.
  2. On the Choose a pre-built or custom connection page, click Create a custom Google Ads data source.
  5. Select a report template and click Select Report.

For a comprehensive list of report types, see the Google Ads Report Types documentation.

  1. Select a Query Mode from the drop-down menu.

When you select Standard, the query is automatically generated from your subsequent field selections. Custom allows you to write your own query using the AdWords Query Language (AWQL). See an example query in the reference table below.

  1. Select the Columns from an auto-generated list based on the report type you selected.
  2. Select the parameters that you want to measure from the Filters/Predicates from the drop-down menus.

Every report contains a variety of parameters or fields used for collecting specific data to generate a report.

  1. Select the Date Range on which you want to filter. To add a date range to a report that does not have one, select a date type from the Columns or Filters/Predicates fields.

To use a custom date range, set Query Mode to Custom and in the AWQL Query box, in the DURING clause, specify From and To dates using standard date range parameters in yyyyMMdd format and wrapped in curly braces. For example,

DURING {date.addMonths(-1).format('yyyyMMdd')},{date.addMonths(-1).endOfMonth.format('yyyyMMdd')}

  1. Select the Download Format for your data. XML and CSV formats are supported.
  2. When you are finished configuring your report, click Get data.
  3. Ensure this is the data you’re looking for and, optionally, select the checkbox to Model your data. Learn more about modelling your data source. Note: Google Ads returns XML or CSV formatted data, depending on your data request. Learn how to model JSON/XML data.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Name, choose refresh settings, and, optionally, share your data source.
  6. Click Save.

The data source is added to your account and is ready to use for custom Klips. You can see all your data sources in your Data Source Library, accessed by clicking Data Sources in the left navigation sidebar.

About predicate values and filters

Many Google Ads reports have a large number of different fields associated with them. Fields that include extra options are referred to by Google Ads as predicate values. Predicate values must have an operator. Examples of operators include "Equals", "Not Equals", and "Starts With".

Some predicates have required operators. For example. the "Device" predicate requires either the "Equals" or "Not Equals" operators. Not every predicate value is compatible with every operator.

About Google Ads money values

Money type fields in Google Ads reports return money values in micro currency units (also known as micros). For example, $1.23 US currency is returned as 1,230,000 micros (1.23 x 1,000,000). To convert micros to the currency used by your report, divide the number of micros by 1,000,000.
Note: Options for any money fields must also be in micros.

Custom building: About APIs and queries

Want to learn more about custom building? This section is for you. Klipfolio connects to hundreds of services in the cloud that have a REST API. If you take the time to learn your service’s API to create queries for the data you want, your possibilities are endless. Here’s a quick overview video on APIs and Klipfolio:

Klipfolio API's 101

If you need help using APIs, ask a data analyst or developer.

Refer to the Google Ads API documentation to discover more data requests.

See the reference table below for API related information and sample queries.

API Documentation Google Ads API documentation

Authentication Method

OAuth Token Authentication
Response Format XML or CSV

Date Format

Example date format:

{date.today.format('yyyyMMdd')}

To change the parameters to weeks, you can use the following parameter:

{date.addWeeks(-1).format('yyyyMMdd')},{date.today.format('yyyyMMdd')}

Sample Queries

The Google Ads connector in Klipfolio allows you to write your own query in AdWords Query Language (AWQL).

Get Google Ads data for the past 30 days:

SELECT
AverageCpc,Amount,Period,Ctr,CampaignId,Clicks,ConversionRate,Cost,CostPerConversion,Date,Impressions,AdNetworkType1,ConversionValue
FROM CAMPAIGN_PERFORMANCE_REPORT
DURING {date.add(-30).format('yyyyMMdd')},{date.today.format('yyyyMMdd')}

Notes

For information on error messages you might receive when using Google Ads API, go to the Common Errors page.
